Curta Calculator

Calculators are great items to have around the house.  They are very convenient for doing simply or complicated mathematics from managing bills to adding up your grocery bills.  It’s definitely a necessity for household with children in school.  As a modern society we sometimes forget the value of technology.  Before the digital age calculators were very different from the calculators that we utilize today.  One of those calculators that are drastically different design wise was the Curta Calculator.  The Curta has cylindrical shape resembling a hand grenade.  It fits right into the palm of your hand.  It can do all the minor functions like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

The Curta calculator was introduced in 1948 by German inventor Curt Herzstark.  It’s a bittersweet story of how the Curta Calculator was invented.   Herzstark was imprisoned by the Nazi during World War II.  During his time there he was commissioned by a prison leader who said that if they liked it they would release him and make him Aryan.  Fortunately for Mr. Herzstark the Americans swooped in and saved the day.  The Nazi regime was taken down and Curt quickly fled to Austria.  He then smartly patented his designs and found rich sponsors to finance its distribution.  These unscrupulous investors later on tried to steal his promising invention but because he patented the Curta after his release, it was practically and legally impossible.  The Curta grew in enormous popularity and was the standard calculator for throughout the world.  It made Herzstark content and rich till the he passed in the late eighties.  The Curta was eventually replaced by the electronic calculator in the seventies.
